New Film Confronts Genocide

April 5, 2010

Worse Than War: PBS April 14, 2010

I’ve just attended an advance screening of a new film, Worse Than War, by Daniel Goldhagen, based on his book of the same name. Goldhagen is also the author of Hitler’s Willing Executioners, a worldwide bestseller which set off an intense international debate over the role of ordinary Germans in the perpetration of the Holocaust.

Goldhagen’s film is a provocative examination of 20th and  21st Century mass extermination throughout the world – shocking assaults on humanity which he has chosen to call “eliminationism,” in order to sidestep the fruitless debate over whether one mass murder or another fits the legal definition of genocide. He also asks what it is that prevents us from doing anything to stop the killers – and offers some ideas that are bound to generate enormous controversy.

I don’t want to write more until I’ve had a chance to see the film again. It’s premiering on PBS on April 14, 2010  and I hope some of our readers can bring their unique experiences and perspective to discussing it in this forum. Check with your local station to confirm the broadcast date and time.
