June 20: World Refugee Day

See related posts on activities today. The excerpt below is from“The Heart of a Refugee,” by Juana Hernandez, age 11, a participant in the Owl & Panther writing project. It’s included in their book Writing Out of the Darkness: An Anthology of Poetry by Refugees in Transition.

The refugees

They walk through the desert
With no water

Many die of thirst
Hunger for the freedom
That they never find

The refugees

Their feelings are buried
In the desert

Their dreams
Die with them

I will always
Have the heart
Of a refugee
