Amnesty International Torture Awareness
Campaign Opens October 18 in New York

New York’s John Jay College of Criminal Justice will be hosting the Amnesty International Torture Awareness Campaign, beginning on October 18th, 2010, with related events continuing through November.

“The campaign began as a result of outrage and disappointment in the way detainees and prisoners were treated after 9/11 by the United States – particularly the use of torture to elicit information.
“We seek to encourage and mobilize students to campaign for internationally recognized human rights to be respected and protected for everyone…Through awareness, we seek to foster student activism and solidarity in order to eradicate human rights violations.

The Campaign will open on October 18, 2010, from 4:00 to 6:00, with “A Question of Torture,” a provocative panel discussion featuring:

  • Larry Cox, Executive Director of Amnesty International
  • Celinet Duran, President, Amnesty International Student Chapter
  • Patricia Gatling, Chair of the New York City Commission on Human Rights
  • Marnia Lazreg, Professor of Sociology, Hunter College
  • Allen Keller, MD, Director of the Bellevue/NYU Program for Survivors of Torture
  • Alfred McCoy, author of A Question of Torture: CIA Interrogation, From the Cold War to the War on Terror
  • Darakshan Raja, Founder, Amnesty International Student Chapter
